Cambridge & District CAMRA

The Hoops, Gt. Eversden

The landlord closed the pub in January 1998, citing lack of trade, and applied for planning permission to turn it into a private house. In late summer it went on the market for 125,000.

The locals set up an action group to oppose the change of use and to try to buy it. There was plenty of support for the group, including financial backing, showing there is plenty of faith that it can be a thriving pub.

Their efforts succeeded and the pub opened around August/September 1999 after refurbishment. It sells three real ales and has a good menu.
