Beer Festival Under Threat

The last pints could have been pulled at Cambridge's popular Winter Ale Festival unless a new venue can be found.

For many years the Festival, organised every January by Cambridge CAMRA, was held in the Students Union canteen at Anglia Polytechnic University, East Road. Redevelopment work there meant that a new home had to be found for the Festival held earlier this year. The Shire Hall Club, behind Shire Hall on Castle Hill, proved an inspired choice with record attendances and sales. Unfortunately the Club went into liquidation shortly afterwards. The premises are now a cafe/conference centre run by the County Council itself and the new management is not willing to hire out the venue to the Beer Festival.

Festival Organiser Paul Ainsworth said "Given the success of the last event it's a real shame that the new regime does not want us back. We have looked around the city for an alternative venue, so far without any success. We need somewhere which holds at least 350 people, is reasonably central and reasonably priced. The premises don't need to be licensed - we can arrange a temporary licence".

The planned dates for next year's Festival are Thursday 27 January to Saturday 29 January.

Paul Ainsworth would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows of a possibly suitable venue - contact details.
