ALE Summer 1997 No. 288

Cambridge & District Branch Pub of the Year 1997

From a list of seven contenders The Fountain, Ely, has been voted Pub of the Year 1997. The presentation is due to take place on the evening of Tuesday 22 July.

For many years, the Fountain was an unassuming two-bar local, one of the ex-Watney pubs which fell into the hands of Brent Walker/Pubmaster. Now it is a free house, the new owners being John and Judith Borland, who have undertaken wholesale refurbishment.

Adnams beers are well to the fore, Bitter and Broadside featuring alongside Woodforde Wherry or perhaps Youngs Special or London Pride. A pleasant traditional environment free from music and machines helps the beer on its way and is conducive to conversation, as the varied clientele will testify.

It will now go forward to the County & Regional competitions.
