ALE 286 is out, featuring Anglia Pub of the Year and Good Beer Guide 1997 Branch entries.

Top Beer Award Goes To Nethergate
The first Champion Beer of East Anglia was decided at the Norwich Beer Festival: it's Nethergate Bitter. It faced stiff competition from the likes of Woodfordes Wherry Bitter (the current UK Champion beer) and Tolly Mild.

Brewery trip to McMullens, Hertford. Monday 4th November, 09:30 - approx. 20:00. Leave from Gwydir Street (Mill Road end). Cost: 10. Ring Nick on Cambridge 361382 or see him at the Cambridge Blue.

The Durham Ox on Mill Road, Cambridge seems to be closing, as part of the redevelopment of the Kinema site for student accomodation, possibly around February.

June 1996

British Pub Week starts on 1st July, publicising the licenced trade and aiming to raise money for the British Olympic team.

Greene King has taken over the Magic Pub chain of 280 pubs. (Cambridge Evening News 21st June). Will it allow them to remain true Free Houses, with the landlord free to buy from any source, or will they have just Greene King beers whilst still being labelled "Free Houses"?

November 1995

The Cambridge & District Branch elected a new Chairman on 28th November 1995: Nick Winnington.

Back in the Seventies Nick was founder Chairman of West Dorset CAMRA and then landlord of a CAMRA Investments pub in Woolwich. He was landlord of The Alma for much of the Eighties and these days runs The Cambridge Blue. He was the local Monster Raving Loony candidate in the 1992 General Election.
