Cambridge & District CAMRA

Community Pubs Month - April 2012

CAMRA has designated April as Community Pubs Month. As part of this, the Cambridge & District Branch of CAMRA is organising a series of events and ctivities to celebrate local pubs and also highlight the difficulties which many face.

On 5 April, we'll be formally launching the Month locally at the Green Man, Grantchester, starting 12.30pm. On the day we'll be issuing our Manifesto for Saving Pubs which we hope that local decision makers will sign up to. We're also unveiling our brand new Online Local Pub Guide, giving full details of the 233 pubs in our Branch area.

Throughout April and into May we're running three Ale Trails. Two Trails cover, respectively, Cambridge and Rural pubs which sell locally brewed beers. The third comprises a selection of other excellent local pubs. All are listed in our Ale Trails leaflet, available from the featured pubs or downloadable here. Participants get their leaflet stamped at each pub where they buy a beer and qualify for a T-shirt (one for each Trail) when they visit at least ten pubs.

13 April sees our Tour of Destruction. Since 2007, no less than 23 pubs have closed in Cambridge alone and CAMRA members will be touring them all by minibus, starting at the Zebra, Maids Causeway at 11am. We'll leave a memento at each pub before concluding this very dry crawl with a well earned pint at our Pub of the Year, the Devonshire Arms, Devonshire Road.

Matters take a celebratory turn on 23 April when we hold our Pub Awards Evening at the University Social Club, Mill Lane, Cambridge (7.30pm for 8pm). Roger Protz, editor of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and author of many books on real ale and pubs, will be presenting awards to nine local pubs, ranging from our overall Pub of the Year and Real Ale Champion to Most Improved Pub, Community Pub, Cider/Perry Pub and others.

Further info will follow nearer the time concerning each of these events and activities.
