Could You Be A Champion Barrel Roller?

Not many people today have heard of barrel rolling but over the years hundreds of people have done it and thousands have watched them.

So what's it all about?

Back in 1933 Burton-Upon-Trent held the very first barrel rolling competition, where brewery workers raced over a 3/4 mile course, rolling with a bobbing stick an empty 36 gallon cask. Winners were the fastest pair over the course. Since that first race many more have been held in the town. However since the 70s there has not been a competition - until now.

As part of the Burton Festival of Beer and Brewing, Sunday 22nd September 1996 sees a revival of the World Barrel Rolling Championships. Teams of two people from all over the U.K. and abroad are expected to descend upon the town along with their cheerleaders and supporters to take part in this competitive and highly entertaining event.

Anyone over 18 is able to enter and there are some great prizes available for winners, from the fastest pub team, the fastest ladies team and the best fancy dress team, to the fastest UK team and the fastest European team.
